25 Core Curriculum … Implications for Next Year r
After reviewing all of the summative data from the Second Step Curriculum, it is noted that every single grade scored lower on • Assertiveness Skills • Empathy The Coping Skills data from 2nd – 5th grades, shows “knowing ways to deal with disagreements and using assertive skills as a low area.

26 Future Topics!

27 Issues of Concern! Data shows in our middle schools and high schools that our students need more COPING SKILLS too. (Reason we chose to do Second Step at this level) This year (February and May) we had 2 suicides in our school community (1 middle school student and 1 high school student) We have a rise in suicide in our community This year several former Kelly students were charged, found guilty, imprisoned, and died from drug crimes.

28 Elementary Students & Their World!
Booming Technology: fast pace, quick responses and feedback, quick fixes Parents/adults take “responsibility” for children’s choices. (often rescue when students can do it and learn from their choices) Children are involved in many adult structured activities. Choices are made for them. Less “neighborhood play” amongst children where they use to learn compromise and working it out.

29 Kelly School Counseling Mission
The mission of the J. Nelson Kelly School Counseling Department is to provide students with an excellent comprehensive school counseling program that helps all students reach their maximum potential, and become lifelong learners and responsible citizens. The program delivers researched-based curriculum, data-driven interventions and student-focused activities …that promote academic achievement, career development and social-emotional growth. By vigorously supporting and creating partnerships with educators and stakeholders, the counseling program advocates for equity, access and success for all.

30 Do we need to do more with “Red Ribbon Week” and drug education?
Brainstorm Ideas How Do We Better Prepare Our Students For Their Future? We could reinforce “coping skills” in our weekly Olweus Class Meetings. Look at more “cooperative learning” where students learn to compromise and problem solve. Do we need to do more with “Red Ribbon Week” and drug education? Parent education on helping our kids become more resilient and have better coping skills. Get ideas from community forums addressing mental health and the “drug epidemic” issues. Review our VISION and MISSION

31 Feedback & Future Topics
