Vectors (1) Vectors are a way of describing movement
They have both a magnitude (size) and a direction Eg) Speed is not a vector as it only has a magnitude Velocity is a Vector as it will have a direction as well as magnitude

Vectors (1) Basic Vector work 2a 1/2a a -2a -a -1/2a
Vectors which are parallel will be represented by the same letter(s). If the distance is doubled, so is the quantity 2a 1/2a a Vectors which are parallel but in the opposite direction are represented by the negative of the letter given -2a -a -1/2a

Vectors (1) C F B E A I D H G Which Vectors are equivalent to AB?
BC, DE, EF, GH, HI F B A E I Which Vectors are equivalent to CI? BH, AG D H G Which Vectors are equivalent to GE? DB, EC, HF Which Vectors are equivalent to AF? DI

Vectors (1) Combining Vectors b a b b+a a a a+b b
You can combine Vectors by addition or subtraction b a The order is not important, but it is important to note that the final Vector is a straight line, NOT the 2 separate Vectors together… b b+a a a a+b b

Vectors (1) Combining Vectors b a -b a -b+a a-b a -b
You can combine Vectors by addition or subtraction b a The order is not important, but it is important to note that the final Vector is a straight line, NOT the 2 separate Vectors together… -b a -b+a a-b a -b

Plenary -a + b b a -2a + 2b -a + b -2a + 2b

Summary We have recapped Translations
We have seen how Vectors are used to represent directions We have learnt how to combine Vectors by addition or subtraction
