Distance, Displacement and Speed 3/25/2011

What do you need in order to know that something is moving?  A FRAME OF REFERENCE!  A system of objects that are not moving with respect to one another.  RELATIVE Motion  Movement in RELATION to a frame of reference.  Choosing a meaningful frame of reference helps you describe motion in a clear and relevant manner.

Distance & Displacement  Distance  The LENGTH of a path between 2 points  Displacement  The direction from the starting point AND length of a straight line from beginning to end point.

VECTORS  What is a vector?  A quantity with a magnitude and direction  Represented by arrows  Show displacement  Can be combined through vector addition

Combining Vectors  You can combine any two vectors.  If both vectors have the SAME direction they can simply be added together  When vectors have different directions, they then must be SUBTRACTED from each other.
