1 Connecting Fidelity Observations to Secondary Reading Coaching
Promoting Adolescent Reading Success Model Demonstration Grant from OSEP Provide context for this work What PARS is Kim St. Martin 10/5/17 miblsi.org

2 Purpose and Intended Outcomes
Provide a brief overview of how we are collecting and using observational data to enhance coaching and feedback to middle school teachers PARS data collection is multi-faceted. This presentation will focus on the collection and use of practice-level fidelity data

3 Agenda Two layers of fidelity observations Coaching structure
Data collection strategies Data use Time for questions and comments

4 Fidelity Observations
Reading Intervention Programs (interventionists supporting struggling readers, including students with IEPs) Phonics for Reading REWARDS REWARDS Secondary REWARDS Plus (Science and Social Studies) Read to Achieve Corrective Reading Secondary Content Area Reading Strategies (ELA, math, science and social studies teachers) Active Participation Explicit Vocabulary Text Summarization Emphasize that there are separate fidelity forms for the 3 strategies and 1 form (or 2 if you count read to achieve) for the intervention programs. If you print copies of the fidelity forms, have people take a look at those handouts here.

5 Coaching Structure Coach A
2 Middle Schools (6th-8th grade), different districts 13 and 17 Content area teachers 7 and 11 Interventionists 31 and 44 Target students with IEPs Coach B 1 Middle School (6th-8th grade) 11 Content area teachers 8 Interventionists 47 Target students with IEPs These numbers are based on information on our spreadsheets as of 9/27/17, but there may be some adjustments made by John and Soraya in the next week.

6 Sample Coaching Sign Up
Here’s an example of how one coach is scheduling his time for consultation and observations (and distinguishing between the 2) with his teachers for one month at a time.

7 Strategy Data This is a sample data spreadsheet for explicit vocabulary. It lines up with the fields on the observation form.

8 Intervention Data This is a sample data spreadsheet for REWARDS. It lines up with the fields on the intervention observation form.

9 Using Observation Data
To provide feedback to teachers To prioritize coaching resources To analyze alongside student outcome data To provide feedback to teachers - This can be pointed out in the notes/next steps sections of the screen shots on the previous 2 slides To prioritize coaching resources - Slide 10 To analyze alongside student outcome data - Slide 11

10 Prioritizing Follow up coaching + observation needed until:
Teacher has demonstrated in at least 2 observations that they are at 80% fidelity or better Consultation continuously available, but prioritized for: Teachers teaching new programs and strategies Teachers with low fidelity data Teachers of students with IEP reading goals

11 Fidelity + Student Outcome Data
This is an example of what we used in TAG last spring. A good example of a teacher implementing with fidelity and consistent student mastery results. Using our new decision rules, we probably could have prioritized observations in other classrooms earlier.

12 Questions and Comments
