3 1. WWII ended the Great Depression
How did this happen? A) The Allied forces needed food, clothing, and armaments (weapons, etc..) B) Canada still had close ties with Britain C) It makes more sense to build things were there is NO WAR going on. It is only LOGICAL that Britain gets supplies from Canada.

4 2. Factors that contributed to industrial development:
A) Demand for military supplies B) Need for food in Europe

A) Increase in steel production, transportation and chemical sectors Old factories expanded: boots, uniforms, and steel. New factories were opened: planes, tanks, and explosives.

B) Agricultural growth: Farmers produced large quantities of food to export to Britain and the Allies.

C) Large increase in the number of women working in factories

8 4. Wartime Restrictions A) During the war, people had to sacrifice a lot. B) Food was rationed to allow more to be exported. C) Gasoline and tires were rationed. D) Clothes were simple: No unnecessary pockets or pleats. E) People were URGED to collect the following things to recycle their materials: Waste paper, glass, bones, fat, rubber, metal caps.

1. The Statute of Westminster is signed in a) This gave Canada Legislative independence. Laws did not have to be approved by Britain anymore. b) Canada is all grown up now. They declare war on Germany on their own

13 2. Another Conscription Crisis?
a) In 1944 William Lyon Mackenzie King gets worried about the lack of Canadian troops b) He had promised NOT to enact conscription, because of all the problems it caused in WWI.

14 Eventually he gives in…
c) He issues conscription to 17, 000 Canadians d) Only 2,463 end up getting to the war, because it ends in 1945 and they needed to undergo training beforehand e) The Conservative Party gets a bad reputation in Quebec and has never won a majority since.

15 3. Suffrage in Quebec a) Women in Quebec were: the last women in Canada to get the right to vote in provincial elections b) Even though women started petitioning the government in the 1920s!

Adelarde Godbout a) He was premier of Quebec during the short time that Maurice Duplessis was not. b) He did a lot during a short amount of time! c) He used wartime to introduce many “progressive” reforms d) He gave women right to vote in Quebec elections in 1940 e) He is considered a forerunner of the Quiet Revolution
