It is a unit that is used everywhere.

10 Today we are going to make a metre strip and use it to measure.
Main Activity Today we are going to make a metre strip and use it to measure.

11 How can you measure length?
You can compare two items and decide which is bigger. You can measure objects using non-standards units such as strides or the length of a book measured in paper clips.

12 Why we need ‘standard units’.
Umut’s grandma wanted to make him a jumper. To help her get the right length, Umut said ‘My arms are eight hand spans long’. Would Umut’s jumper be a perfect fit?

13 Who has larger hands? You or your teacher?
So would a jumper made by the teacher and your own hand spans be the same? What could we use to make sure your jumper and your teacher’s were the same length? We must use ‘standard units’.

14 All over the country, people measure in the same units.
What is a standard unit? All over the country, people measure in the same units. A jumper made in Scotland will be the same length as one made in Wales. This is called a standard unit. Today you will learn how to use a metre.

15 Group Work You are to work in mixed ability groups to make a ‘metre man’. Join strips of paper to make a strip one metre long. Draw a person the full length of the finished strip and colour it. Use the ‘metre man’ to find things that are shorter/longer/about the same as a metre.
