Math Study Skills Still Matter!

SOME BASIC STUDY SKILLS FOR MATH: 1. Attend all classes.
2.     Come to class prepared to learn. Look over the sections from the textbook that will be covered to become familiar with the concepts and vocabulary. Read each carefully. 3.    Take notes in class (examples, graphs, etc.) 4.     Ask questions about problems you don't understand. 5.     After class review your notes and make any additions or corrections needed. 6.        Work all homework problems. (At least try all problems. DON'T GIVE UP!) a.      Be neat with your work and watch your use of symbols. b.     Keep homework in order in notebook and use it as your study guide. c.      Make a note by homework problems that you had to correct or found especially difficult. Study and practice these and others like them when preparing for a test.

7.     Be in the classroom a few minutes before class starts to review previous class notes and homework. 8.    Find the name and phone number of someone in this class. Call when you miss class to find out exactly what was covered in that class so you can try to keep up. Also, call when you’re having difficulty doing assignments. You may be able to help each other. 9.    Form study groups with people in your class or other classes. Work together on homework and/or studying for tests when possible. 10.  Learn some basic test-taking strategies and try to apply them on each test you take. 11.   Learn some anxiety reduction exercises to use if you experience “Math Anxiety.”

REMINDER: A general rule for study in college-level courses is that you should spend at least 2 Hours outside of class studying for every hour spent in that class.
