1 Warm-up Combine the following sets of sentences using either a semicolon (;) or a comma and conjunction (FANBOYS). My alarm didn’t go off. I wasn’t late to school. Myles didn’t like his neighbor. He was always playing the drums too loud. She ate quickly. The doorbell was going to ring any minute. I can take the bus to school. She can pick me up too. I really wanted to sleep in. I still wanted to make it on time.

3 Colon [:] Uses Before a LIST.
Ex: I’m enrolled in the following classes: English, science, algebra, and math. Ex: As I walked to the store, I thought of three things I needed: apples, milk, and eggs. Between 2 sentences when the 2nd sentence explains or illustrates the first sentence. Ex: There is only one thing left to do now: Confess while you still have time. Ex: I have a question regarding the comment you made: Was that intended at me?

5 Colon [:] Uses (cont.) Before a QUOTE, when the lead-in can stand by itself. Ex: Lady Macbeth asks the question: “Are you a man?” Versus – Lady Macbeth asks, “Are you a man?” Ex: Macduff hunts down Macbeth and informs him of his fate has been fulfilled: “From my mother’s womb, I was untimely ripped!” Versus - Macduff remarks, “From my mother’s womb, I was untimely ripped!”
