Murdoch University is based on a 1970’s American planning model where the car was the prevalent transport mode and the campus was a community unto itself
We are reshaping the University to:
More actively attract and connect to elements of the community
Play a much more overt role in shaping communities, knowledge hubs and cities
Re-focus on solving the real world challenges we confront including aboriginal community health and environmental education

The challenge is now to leverage our large city based landholding (246hectares) integrating it into a significant urban hub where over 3 billion dollars of investment has taken place in health and transport infrastructure.
We are doing this through engagement and breaking down the traditional borders.
We are creating a porous, connected and integrated University campus – both physically and virtually.

Murdoch has the unique situation in WA where its main campus is situated 12km from the Perth CBD and yet has one of the most extensive city based ‘living laboratories’ containing health and food, aged care, environmental wet lands and TAFE
We have a unique site and partnership context which is guiding our approach and includes:
That Murdoch has realised it needs to be a leader in planning and delivery of the precinct
Being an environmental exemplar – including integration to the adjacent 3400 hectare regional wetland
Deliver a District Energy scheme – where we will use technology to scale outcomes to support adjacent areas
Establish the State’s first Aboriginal wellbeing centre linked with aboriginal research activities
Construction of the Harry Butler Environmental Centre – a community learning centre built on the legacy of West Australian environmental leader Harry Butler
Bridging into allied health research to integrating across two tertiary hospitals and with industry
Building on WA’s place as a holder of a large share of the world’s lithium deposits
Defining the future of aged care through research and innovation at our existing onsite Aged care facilities

5. We are establishing the ‘Knowledge and Health Precinct’ – the district scaled approach bringing multiple stakeholders together

6. Murdoch is becoming a city which brings together sectors/industries/services through creation of student, business and industry facilities

7. We are extending the university beyond the campus edge - Integrating with health, start-ups and collaborative networks

8. The University is becoming a global centre for health based research anchored by the newly announced Australian National Phenome Centre

9. We are leveraging infrastructure connecting to the local area, city and beyond

10. The doors of the University are opening wide inviting the community to the campus – via applied research, employability, cultural /outreach community services.
We are creating urban scaled synergies with opportunity for investment into academic, business, leisure and residential outcomes underpinned by partnerships in technology, energy and transportation infrastructure.

11. While we are developing urban-scaled projects that bring together education, government, business, industry and the community in one place, we are prioritising our focus on planning and caring for the environment to ensure urban growth and our natural habitat can coexist and prosper over the long term.
