1 Second Speech to be given Date:
Objectives Write a speech with the intentions of reading it aloud. Be able to research data for the speeches. Today’s motion – take it down and answer Q. ‘The voting age should be lowered’ Do you agree or disagree – write two reasons. We’ll share then. Write other people’s points (this will help later) Note in homework journal to bring in rulers tomorrow

2 Note down the following
Some Yes Points They deserve to have a say. Human Rights It would get younger people interested in politics Consistency – what else they can do at 16 Alienation – not feeling part of something Citizenship Increase turnout Representation Effected be the policy makers decisions Tax and other issues to vote on. Some No points: Immature Choices Don't really care They are still maturing, and have not learned enough yet through education as well as experience to make fully informed decisions. Turnout Where to draw the line? Rights of the 16 year old are not as far reaching as supposed so they do not warrant the vote on the 'rights'/consistency argument

3 Write the OUTLINE of a speech in class, using the structure
Add facts by 1) asking ‘named adults’, 2)‘named websites’ and/or 3) ‘named books/documents’ Introduction – formal, what are you discussing today (point 1,2,3) and why? One Paragraph Point One – what is it. Explain it with examples, anecdotes and/or facts. Ask rhetorical question. Paragraph Definition – What is voting? What age are you talking about? WHY SHOULD I CARE? Use a metaphor or simile. One Paragraph Point Two and Three – New Paragraphs, more than one line long. Repetition, hyperbole, refuting, etc. Reference – who does this affect, what might people say? (Young, old, politicians?) Add to Paragraph 2 Conclusion – Summary, final thoughts, recommendations, and formal ‘Thank you for listening’.

4 Homework: Research three facts to put into your speech.
1) Asking ‘named adults’, 2)‘named websites’ and/or 3) ‘named books/documents’ Practise saying your speech aloud. Best way to research – Google the question you’re asking. Debatewise .org Ask teachers, management, parents, the mayor or TD, ask Ms. Nolan for advise or a book.
