1 August Turn in your signed documents if you haven’t already done so ( to the tray on my desk) Do Now (on paper from yesterday) Name the following compounds 1. CaCO3 2. Al(OH)3 3. MgCl2

2 HW Check 1.28 Write the formula for the following Sodium and hydroxide Iron(III) and Chlorine Write the name for the following LiBr CuSO4

3 Homework 1-28 Covalent Formulas Practice half sheet
Get contracts signed for the Syllabus, Safety contract. LAB TOMORROW

5 Week of January 26 Jan 26 – Ionic Formula Writing Jan 27 – Quiz Ionic Nomenclature Tutoring Jan 28 – Covalent Naming and Formula Writing Jan 29 – Review Jan 30 – Lab Day!

6 Classroom Review Classroom Procedures Grades Lab Contracts Remind 101 – Extra credit

7 Model 3

8 Rules for Naming Ionic Compounds (Transition metals)
Count the different elements If TWO elements it is Ionic Binary Name the transition metal first Determine Charge of the transition metal and write as a roman numeral Name the nonmetal and change the end to “ide” If THREE elements it is Ionic Ternary Name the polyatomic ion and DO NOT change the end to “ide”

9 Notebook Setup! Have out all papers you have received and worked on this semester Each table needs a table or glue IF you do not have a notebook yet have out a blank sheet of paper that you can take down the TOC

10 First three pages (front and back) TOC
Syllabus scavenger hunt and signature 1-21 Safety First ! 1-21 Periodic Table (colored one) 1-22 Periodic table HW ½ sheet 1-22 Warm-ups week 1-26 /Ionic Compound Formula Notes 1-26 Ionic Bonding Practice ½ sheet HW 1-26 Naming Pogil (models 1-3) 1-27 Nomenclature half sheet hw 1-27 Covalent compuond nomenclature notes 1-28 Covalent Formulas Practice ½ sheet HW (1-14) 1/28

11 Molecular Compounds (nonmetals only!)

12 Rules for Naming Molecular Compounds
Count the different elements If ONE element it is a diatomic molecule Name the element (Br2, I2, N2, Cl2, H2, O2, F2) If TWO elements it is Covalent binary Name the first element, using prefixes ( except “mono”) Name second element, using prefixes (including “mono”) Change the end to “ide”

13 Prefixes Mono- 1 Di- 2 Tri- 3 Tetra- 4 Penta- 5 Hexa- 6 Hepta- 7 Octa-
8 Nona- 9 Deca- 10

14 Practice! N2O5 Dinitrogen pentoxide CO  PCl3  N2O  P2O5 

15 Molecular Compounds Examples Carbon monoxide  Carbon dioxide 
Phosphorous trichloride  Phosphorous pentachloride  Carbon tetrachloride  Diphosphours pentachloride  Notice there is no prefix if there is only one of the first atom!!!

16 Wrap-up What distinguishes an ionic from a molecular compound?

17 HW headstart
