1 Light Week 3 Ask students about their preliminary knowledge regarding light

2 What is Light? Light is an electromagnetic wave that can be seen by humans Talk about how we can only perceive a tiny band of light; Elaborate how light is energy

3 Light can be reflected and refracted
Reflection: bouncing light off an object Refraction: bending light as it moves through a material Light travels like a ball being thrown very fast (too fast to see) Give examples of reflection (mirror) and refraction (water)

4 Transparency and Translucency
Transparent: allowing light to pass through Translucent: allowing some light to pass through When something is Opaque, it allows no light to pass through. Give examples of each (clear glass, murky water, piece of paper) Ask for more examples of each

5 Spectrums Light Spectrum: Encompasses all possible wavelengths of light Visible Spectrum: Encompasses only the wavelengths of light visible to the human eye Talk about other spectrums (radio, x-ray, microwave) and their practical applications. ROY G BIV and the transition from low to high energy

6 The Light Prism Prism: a transparent object that can refract white light into its component colors The component colors are also known as a rainbow! Can show a clip or image of a prism’s effects Confirm understanding of light and its components

7 Photons Photons: a tiny particle of light energy
Any light you see is a collection of photons. Each photon has a different frequency of color. Compare to drops of water in a cup, or other example of a sum from small parts
