1 Sleep Duration and Blood Pressure
Short sleep duration is linked to increased risk of high blood pressure Each hour of reduction in sleep was associated with a 37% increased risk of developing high blood pressure Increased Risk of Hypertension (%) As regular sleep duration goes down, the risk of developing high blood pressure goes up. In this study of 578 men and women, those who got an hour less sleep each day had a 37% increased risk of developing high blood pressure during the 5-year study. These results are adjusted for age, sex, and race. After adjusting for other risk factors (income, education, smoking, BMI, physical activity, alcohol use), the risk of high blood pressure linked to less sleep still remained, but it dropped to a 30% increased risk. 2 Sleep Duration and Blood Pressure
NHANES I study Persons getting 5 hours of sleep daily had a 60% increased risk of developing high blood pressure (over the 8-10 year study) compared to people getting 7-8 hours of sleep daily. Increased Risk of Hypertension (%) In the large prospective study, NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study, researchers found that people who got 5 hours or less of sleep daily had a 60% increased risk of developing high blood pressure compared to individuals getting 7-8 hours of sleep daily.
