Identify different ways to connect to the Internet. Compare the services provided by a variety of Internet service providers. Be able to make an informed decision on what Internet services would fit individual needs and budget.

INTRODUCTION How are you able to connect to the Internet from home?
Do you have Internet Connection at home? If so, who provides this service? Do you have wi-fi? What is your wi-fi name? Is it protected? the Internet works?

A BUSINESS THAT HAS A POINT OF PRESENCE CONNECTION OFFERS TEMPORARY CONNECTIONS TO INDIVIDUALS AND COMPANIES FOR A FEE DEPENDING ON YOUR NEEDS, THERE ARE MANY ISPs TO CHOOSE FROM (see Includes Internet, browse the world wide web, and Many different ISPs. On website, search is over 170 ISPs for Toronto area. You are probably only familiar with a handful of companies. More mainstream because they are accessible, affordable and of course marketed to you. - Bell and Rogers may have more restrictions than you require, ie. Limit bandwidth (amount of data that can be transferred by connection)

DIAL-UP Requires a computer and a phone-line
(most computers have built in modem) Dial a telephone number Connect to a phone line through your ISP Allows you access to the Internet Modem – used to send digital data over a phone line Example: Bell will give you a dial-up access phone number to connect to the internet

Advantages Inexpensive Can pay as you go using general ID Disadvantages Slow overall speed Ties up your phone line Low quality data transfers Example - Some computer games will not work because the transfer rate is too slow.

BROADBAND a wide band of frequencies that is available to transmit information. allows more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time SO THE USER IS ABLE TO VIEW OR DOWNLOAD ON THE INTERNET LARGER FILES

DSL (DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE)
REQUIRES A COMPUTER, MODEM, AND A REGULAR PHONE LINE ALLOWS YOU TO USE THE PHONE WHILE ON THE INTERNET Uses fibre optics/copper wiring EXAMPLE: BELL FIBE - Offers different services based on speeds Bell Fibe Still using your phone line, using the copper wiring, but doesn’t tie up the line. Because on a higher frequency than voice. Modems are usually rented from the company, some may have buy option See bell pamphlet, read through various offerings

can use existing phone line Can pay in a Bundle with phone/TV from ISP Disadvantages: The service is not available everywhere. More expensive than Dial-up

Does not tie up phone lines Can download larger files Can pay in a Bundle with phone/TV from ISP Disadvantages More expensive than dial-up Cable vs. DSL speeds are up for debate. Studies show it is also dependant on the company you are using and how they are connected to the Internet.

Requires a wireless modem or router May have free access, paid access, or password access Antenna on modem sends a signal through airwaves 3G & 4G Networks also available through providers for cellphones and tablets Satellite Access is also available for people in remote locations Wireless, see Bell pamphlet, only available in Canada SATELLITE ACCESS IS USED BY LARGER COMPANIES. And for remote users who require high-speed access EXAMPLE: CANADA’S TELEVISION STATIONS

Advantages Portable and convenient Can also use on Cellular phone, tablet, gaming device, laptop, etc. Disadvantages Can be costly Service is not available in all areas Personal Digital Assistant Remote User, attaches a satellite receptor dish, similar to satellite tv to their house/business
