Broadband Technology is continually changing and expanding Broadband is sweeping the nation as the newest form of high speed Internet 56k dial-up modems are being seen less and less and people choose to use Broadband forms of Internet instead

Benefits of Broadband Constant and instantaneous Internet Access No delays due to busy signals Higher data transfer speeds Web pages load faster Your online experience is enhanced because it is enjoyable rather than frustrating

Cable Internet Access Requires use of a Cable Modem The Cable Modem is connected to your computer through an Ethernet Network Speed of Cable Internet Access is 30 times that of a 56k Modem Your telephone and Internet connection are routed through a single connection

Advantages and Disadvantages of Cable Networks Advantages Available more widespread than DSL Potentially faster than DSL Cheaper than DSL Disadvantages Less secure than DSL The connection is shared with others so sometimes speed will vary

DSL Offers Internet connection with a high bandwidth=high speed Can reach speeds up to 30 times faster than regular dial-up connection Using DSL does not tie up a phone line because of the splitter The closer you are to your providers central office; the faster your connection will be

DSL Equipment The farthest you can be from your central office is 18,000 feet The closer you are, the faster your connection Two main pieces of DSL equipment are a transceiver and an Access Multiplexer

Advantages and Disadvantages of DSL Advantages Always on and you can use your regular telephone at the same time Higher speed than dial-up connections DSL is more secure than cable NO new wiring is necessary because you can use your existing telephone line Disadvantages The connection is faster the closer you are to your provider’s central office The connection is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the Internet. Not available everywhere

Companies who supply DSL and Cable Connection Ameritech Yahoo: SBC Pacific Bell Roadrunner Comcast MSN Earthlink More and more companies are providing DSL and Cable Access because of its growing population It can be very expensive for companies
