3 Similar Deaths Malcolm X was assassinated in Manhattan on February 21, 1965. He was to speak to a crowd about moving toward a more peaceful solution to the race problem in America. He was shot at least 21 times by 3 Nation of Islam members.

4 Similar Deaths King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 while helping to organize a sanitation workers’ strike in Memphis, TN. Killed by a White Supremacist named James Earl Ray. After his death riots of frustration erupted in hundreds of U.S. cities

Lee. W. Minikus, a Caucasian male, worked for the California Highway Patrol Minikus pulled over Marquette Frye on suspicion of driving while intoxicated

9 The Crowd A crowd of people gathered at the scene where Frye was being arrested A confrontation began between the crowd and police officers, that were on the scene

10 Rioting Riots took place in Watts for 6 days
The riot destroyed: cars, grocery stores, department stores, and pawn shops $ 40 million of property was destroyed

11 Rioting 14,000 California National Guardsman were sent to Watts
A curfew was put into place, to stop the rioting 34 people died 1,000 people injured 4,000 people arrested
