3 ELECTION OF WADE HAMPTON
White Democratic “Red Shirts” led by Wade Hampton, Confederate general led a campaign of violence, intimidation, and fraud to elect Hampton as Governor in 1876 More troops were sent in to monitor the election, but fraud continued Election came down to two candidates and was decided in the General Assembly

Tilden (Democrat) vs. Hayes (Republican) At the end of the election, no candidate had the majority of the votes Compromise of 1877 Southern Democrats agreed to give Hayes their votes if he removed federal troops from the South Federal troops leave in April 1877. Wade Hampton becomes undisputed governor. Reconstruction officially ends in SC
