Connotation- An idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal/primary meaning. Denotation- The literal/primary meaning of a word. Synonym- A word that has the same meaning/denotation as another word. Tone- The way the author/narrator feels about the subject. If two words have the same meaning (denotation) it is like they are the same color. But they each have their own connotation, which is like what shade of that color the word is.

Changing a word Different words may have the same basic meaning, but slightly a slightly different connotation, which affects the tone of the sentence. Writers choose words to fit what they mean, and the word choice shows you how they feel about a subject (author’s tone).

EQ How does figurative language add interest to writing?

Is there only one way to do something?

Figurative Language Definition- Any expressive use of language in which words are used in other than their literal sense in order to suggest a picture or image. Figurative language, in poetry writing or otherwise, can be an effective and creative way to make a point or show an image that the reader wasn’t expecting. It is very visual…

4 main types 1. Simile 2. Metaphor 3. Personification 4. Hyperbole

Simile/Metaphor Simile- Comparing two unlike things using “like” or “as” Ex.- She was as mad as a wet hen. Metaphor- Comparing two unlike things not using “like” or “as” Ex.- The sun was a lion, bearing down upon it’s prey. Similes/Metaphors are useful to compare things to help the reader understand them in a different way.

Personification Personification- Giving an inanimate object human or living qualities. Ex. The chair groaned in protest when I sat on it. *Personification is useful to make emotion through non-living characters. (The pen sat in the desk, lonely that it was not being used to write.)

Hyperbole Hyperbole- Exaggerated speech Ex. I am so hungry I could eat a horse. *Hyperboles are useful to make something seem like a bigger issue than it actually is.
