Important Vocabulary

2. Ecosystem
All of the organisms living in an area together with their physical environment
Ex: An oak forest, a coral reef, a vacant lot
No clear boundary – there is flow from one to another

3. Biotic Living and once living parts of an ecosystem
Includes all plants and animals, dead organisms, dead parts of organisms, and organisms’ waste products

4. Abiotic Nonliving parts of the ecosystem.
Includes air, water, rocks, sand, light, temperature, etc.

5. Vocabulary Review Organism: individual living thing
Species: group of organisms that can mate to produce fertile offspring
Population: a group of organisms that live in the same place at the same time
Community: group of various species that live in the same place and interact with each other
