3 WEEE MANAGEMENT IN THE CARIBBEAN SUB-REGION
"The Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Caribbean (BCRC-Caribbean) is actively engaged with various public sector, private sector and civil society groups in the Caribbean region to develop a strategy for the environmentally sound management of used and end-of-life electronic and electrical equipment (E-Waste).

4 WEEE MANAGEMENT FOR THE CARIBBEAN SUB-REGION
This strategy incorporates five key elements: 1) public awareness for source segregation of e-waste; 2) the fostering of a take-back system for used mobile phones and computers in conjunction with original equipment manufacturers (eg. Samsung, Blackberry, Nokia, Dell, HP, etc); 3) the stimulation of, and provision of technical support for, entrepreneurship in e-waste recovery and component disassembly; 4) the stimulation of, and provision of technical support for, used computing and mobile phone refurbishment; and 5) The creation of a competitive commercial environment for the recycling of disassembled components of e-waste.

5 WEEE MANAGEMENT FOR THE CARIBBEAN SUB-REGION
The initiative to develop this strategy was derived from a Needs Assessment of priority issues which the BCRC-Caribbean conducted among the countries in the region in 2011. Since that time the BCRC-Caribbean has Participated in a number of technical workshops to build its own capacity to develop and oversee the implementation of this strategy, Is in the process of developing a pilot project for funding by any interested party and Is hosting a regional training workshop in July 2013 on the implementation of the PACE Guidelines by Caribbean waste management entities and private sector investors."
