1 The Web Based Teaching Tool
An Introduction 12/2/2018 WBTT

2 The Web Based Teaching Tool
Overview This presentation will explain: What the Web Based Teaching Tool (WBTT) is The history of WBTT How WBTT is used in schools 12/2/2018 WBTT

3 The Web Based Teaching Tool
What is the WBTT? WBTT is used by primary teachers to support their students who may be at risk for future school difficulties WBTT can be accessed anywhere via the Internet WBTT is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education for use in all publicly funded schools in Ontario 12/2/2018 WBTT

WBTT History In 1999 the LDAO began the Promoting Early Intervention (PEI) Initiative in response to the McCain-Mustard Early Years Report. The report recommended closer attention be paid to the crucial early years. 12/2/2018 WBTT

WBTT History 14 focus groups were conducted with School Boards across Ontario. It was determined that there is: A wide range of practice in Boards regarding screening No standardized approach to screening young students No guarantee that screening leads to intervention with flagged students 12/2/2018 WBTT

WBTT History Other Information Considered by PEI: Kindergarten students arrive with various degrees of readiness. Learning difficulties may result from many factors, including English as a second language, socio-economic circumstances, vision and hearing impairments. Over time, struggling students may begin to present as learning disabled, leading to inappropriate identifications. “Identification without intervention can be more detrimental than the absence of identification.” - Dan Offord (Centre for Studies of Children at Risk, McMaster University). 12/2/2018 WBTT

7 The Web Based Teaching Tool
WBTT History The PEI working groups determined that educators need a system to help teachers to differentiate between those students with long-term learning problems and those who require extra support in order to catch up to their peers and created The Web Based Teaching Tool. 12/2/2018 WBTT

… is based on a Dynamic Screening and Intervention Model. The process is a circular one: a student’s abilities are examined, interventions target the child’s areas of need, and the student is continually tracked to measure progress. This cycle continues as long as necessary. 12/2/2018 WBTT

9 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Dynamic Screening and Intervention Model screening and/or tracking flagging intervention 12/2/2018 WBTT

10 The Web Based Teaching Tool
Features Empirically validated screening tools to identify students (K-3) at risk for future school failure Evidence-based interventions including skill- specific lesson plans, teaching strategies and behaviour management techniques 12/2/2018 WBTT

11 The Web Based Teaching Tool
Features User-friendly and ongoing tracking framework Teacher orientation and ongoing support, idea sharing and access to specialists The highest level of security available online 12/2/2018 WBTT

12 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The WBTT Process Step One: Screening Teachers screen all students with easy to use, valid and predictive screening tools to measure school readiness and phonological awareness. Please note: A numeracy screen is currently in development. 12/2/2018 WBTT

13 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The WBTT Process Step Two: Flagging The results of the screens are used to flag students who are at risk for learning difficulties. This is a non-categorical flagging, and not an identification or diagnosis. 12/2/2018 WBTT

14 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The WBTT Process Step Three: Intervention + Tracking Observation checklists help to further determine where a flagged student’s strengths and needs lie and allow teachers to track student response to interventions. The observation checklists may be used differently by individual teachers. 12/2/2018 WBTT

15 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The WBTT Process Step Three cont.: Intervention + Tracking Using the screening results, tracking and classroom observations, teachers search for strategies in the WBTT Interventions database. These strategies range from full-class lesson plans to take-home ideas for parents. 12/2/2018 WBTT

16 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT The Login Page: Individual user names and passwords ensure privacy of information; each teacher has exclusive access to the data they enter. 12/2/2018 WBTT

17 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT The Home Page: From the Main Task Page, teachers can choose a variety of functions. 12/2/2018 WBTT

18 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT The Student Page: Teachers create class lists and select students from the Class List dropdown menu. 12/2/2018 WBTT

19 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT The Screenings Page: Screens for each student are displayed and scored based on grade. 12/2/2018 WBTT

20 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT The Results Page: Auto generated reports for each screen can be printed and stored for future reference. 12/2/2018 WBTT

21 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT The Interventions Page: The Interventions Database contains strategies for classroom and home use. 12/2/2018 WBTT

22 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT Interventions: Each search will produce a list of strategies. Each entry can be printed and/or added to a student’s growth plan. 12/2/2018 WBTT

23 The Web Based Teaching Tool
The Quick Tour of the WBTT An Observation Checklist: Observation Checklists are divided into subject strands and are printable. 12/2/2018 WBTT

24 The Web Based Teaching Tool
Why Use the Web Based Teaching Tool? Facilitates early, non-categorical identification of and support for students “at risk” Flagged students are continuously supported through the use and tracking of interventions Benefits all children in the class Promotes parent communication and involvement Aids in classroom assessment, evaluation and reporting Validates teacher concerns and expedites identification (if necessary) 12/2/2018 WBTT
