Chapter 3 Notes HAWAIIS ROYAL HISTORY TEXTBOOK August 19, 2008

According to the Anthropologist the Hawaiians are members of a race of people called Polynesians. Polynesians are from many races-race is more than just color. It involves climate, food, location which contribute to physical structure. Most believe they came from southern Asia. Things they had in common were their language, the same gods, and similar was of doing things. When people live together long enough, they develop a distinct lifestyle or a society. This lifestyle is called a culture.

Settling Islands Migrating groups left Asia and set out to the Pacific Ocean. They took their culture with them in the form of knowledge and tools. Today Polynesians live mainly in the part of the PO called the Polynesian Triangle; New Zealand to the west, Easter Island to the east, and Hawaii to the north. In time, people had to adapt to different conditions on each island, and this is where the Polynesian culture evolved differently. Some believed they planned their trips with the idea of finding new homes in faraway places. Others feel the voyage might have been more accidental-sail of course. When you pick up and move to another location, this is called migrating. The Polynesians were excellent sailors, they sailed without navigational instruments. Many people thought this was impossible.

The First Hawaiians Did not leave us a story. Those who came after did tell us a story. The first group to arrive brought little with them. They must have lived a very simple life, eating mostly fish and some fruits. There were no coconut trees and few, if any, animals. They did not know much about farming. They must have come from the Marquesas Islands and must have been hardy people to survive with so little.

The Later Hawaiians 11th century, some people left Tahiti and set sail for Hawaii. They brought with them pigs, dogs, chickens, taro, coconut, banana, and wauke. They brought their gods, planned careful voyages, built strong canoes and made sure to bring with them healthy and strong people. They needed food and water, seeds and plants to grow in the new place. The first people were prob. smaller then the new people. They were prob. made into slaves.
