1 Module 7 Effective Monitoring and Supervision

2 Session Objectives Learn techniques for effective supervision
Discuss the importance of monitoring and providing skillful feedback to students Identify “structural variables” that positively or negatively impact monitoring and supervision Identify hotspots and times of day when additional supervision may be necessary

3 Effective Supervision
In the right place-mentally: looking alert being interactive

4 Interacting Positively Proactively Intervening
The Art of Supervision Instruction Interacting Positively Professional Proactively Intervening Visibility Scanning Circulating Name all 7 please.

5 Find the Top Ten Supervision Skills
As I describe them: Write a “S” next to 2 skills you already do well. Next, write a “G” for 2 skills which you want to improve. Now the staff needs to determine one (1) behavior on which to start improving beginning tomorrow. Give the participants the directions to select that behavior and then share it with a partner. Remind the partner to ask the staff member how they did with improving that specific supervision behavior.

6 Why is it Important to Circulate?
Greater visibility Direct observation by the supervisor Increased rate of proximity Increased opportunity for contact Increased opportunity for positive reinforcement Increased likelihood of encountering inappropriate behaviors

7 Scanning is the ability to systematically and visually scan more distant parts of an area and recognize signs or sounds that may indicate problem behavior

8 Instructional Strategies
Define what you are teaching Model the skill Practice the skill Reward successful practice Re-teach the skill if practice is not successful Test it in natural settings and routines

9 Correcting Student Behavior
Be calm, business-like, and respectful Take the student(s) aside Define the problem behavior and focus on the appropriate behavior Ask for acknowledgement Give the student choices Describe the prescribed consequence Apply the consequence

10 Supervision: Another View
Protect Expect Connect Correct Your presence prompts student rule-following Your positive presence will promote: An invitational school climate A spirit of cooperation A sense of adult availability Student rule-following has a positive affect on safety and civility Randy Sprick, Ph.D., “Safe and Civil Schools”

11 Module 7: Team Assignment
Determine level of supervision needed for the common areas and activities addressed so far. Use a campus map to determine “hot spots”. Think “connect the dots”. Discuss and determine how your campus will teach and utilize the concepts of “The Art of Supervision”.
