6 Adding & Subtracting in Scientific Notation (3.9 x 1011) + (3.6 x 109)
3.9 and 3.6 are called Constants 1011: 10 is your base and 11 is your exponent Exponents have to be the same! If your exponents are different, choose the expression with the smaller exponent and make the exponent the same as the bigger exponent by moving your decimal to the left “x” amount of times. (3.9 x 1011) + (3.6 x 109) 3.6 x 109 * add 2 to your exponent 9 (2+9 = 11) 0.36 * move your decimal two places to the left (3.9 x 1011) + (0.36 x 1011) If/When your exponents are the same. Add your coefficients and keep the same 10b. * remember to line your decimals up. 3.936 x 1011

7 Check for understanding Quiz
•I can perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation. •I know the applications of using scientific notation. •I can use my understanding of exponents, scientific notation, and real numbers to help me interpret real world situations. MGSE8.EE.3 Use numbers expressed in scientific notation to estimate very large or very small quantities, and to express how many times as much one is than the other. MGSE8.EE.4 Add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Interpret Scientific notation that has been generated by technology (e.g. calculators). Check for understanding Quiz
