Why do teens post inappropriate stuff on social media? (List some ideas and then look at ours) For attention To be funny To start drama Because they are hurt, mad, getting revenge Because they think it is private and only a certain person/people will see Because they think they can trust the person/people they are messaging Because they don’t know it is wrong Because they don’t think before they hit send

6 One of the scariest consequences of inappropriate posting is something called sextortion.

7 Sextortion is the practice of using personal information -- often photos obtained by illicit means -- to extort victims into providing more sexually explicit photos and videos.

8 This means that a person could manipulate or blackmail you into doing increasingly dangerous things by using things you post. Someone who you think is your real life friend could do this. An online acquaintance or even a stranger can get access to your social media and use it to harm you.

9 Here is an example: Luis Mijangos, a sextortion offender who managed to trick women and teenage girls into downloading malware that would allow him to remotely take control of their computers. He could turn on their webcams and microphones and spy on them, as well as see everything they typed. Sometimes, he'd pretend to be their boyfriends in order to get them to send him pornographic materials of themselves -- and then he used that to extort them more. It's a vicious cycle. In all, Mijangos had at least 230 victims, 44 of whom were under the age of 18. He was eventually caught and got six years in prison. He is due for release in December Please turn up your sound for the video on the next slide.

11 How do you protect yourself??
Take Control! If you’re asked to share something that makes you uncomfortable, you have a right to say no, even if you already shared something with them before. Talk with someone you trust Text ‘THORN’ to and immediately speak with a trained Crisis Text Line counselor. Have your friend’s backs! Today, right now, tell your closest friends if this ever happens to them, you’ll be there, you won’t judge, you have their back! You will even tell them to STOP IT if you worry about their choices. Report sextortion! You are legally a minor. Let authorities know (even if your profile has a legal age listed). Watch what you post! Don’t post inappropriate info including pics! Don’t forward inappropriate pics! PROTIP: You might be considered legally responsible if you forward these images.
