2. Narrative nonfiction A nonfiction story is about things that are real.
A narrative story follows the beginning, middle, and end sequence.
A narrative nonfiction tells a story that could have happened.

3. Main idea and supporting details
The main idea is the big idea of the entire story.
Supporting details are clues to show the main idea.
If the main idea is “Fire fighters have a tough job”, a supporting detail may be “They need to answer calls even late at night”.

4. Text structure: Sequence
Remember when we wrote our How-To papers?
We used transitions to link details and show order (first, next, then, last).
Authors put events in order to show when they happened
Let’s Practice! Read the following events. On a piece of paper, write the events in the order you think they happened.
Jack gave money to the ice cream man.
Jack chose what ice cream he wanted.
Jack heard the ice cream truck.
Excited, Jack ran outside.
The ice cream truck stopped when he saw Jack.

5. Author’s Purpose: Why did they write it?
Persuade: The author wants to convince the reader about something.
Inform: The author wants to tell the reader facts.
Entertain: The author wants to make the reader have fun.
