13 DAMAGE The Mississippi Gulf Coast bore the brunt of Hurricane Katrina. The three coastal counties of Mississippi, populated by about 400,000 people (the population of New Orleans), had been direct witness to one of natures most destructive events. Katrina's nearly 30-foot plus storm surge along the Mississippi Gulf Coast was the most extensive, as well as the highest, in the documented history of the United States

14 DAMAGE This destroyed neighborhood in East Biloxi was located away from both the coastline and Biloxi's Back Bay, and like most areas on the Mississippi Gulf Coast above sea level This destroyed neighborhood in East Biloxi was located away from both the coastline and Biloxi's Back Bay, and like most areas on the Mississippi Gulf Coast above sea level For most Coast residents Hurricane Camille was the benchmark against which all other storms were measured. In the minds of many there was a feeling that at some time another storm would come that was the equal or worse than Camille
