What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
Preliminary proclamation issued on September 22, 1862 Freed all slaves who were in the Confederate states fighting for the Union IMPORTANT: Did not free all slaves!!! The document was very limited

Personal views Morally opposed to slavery Desperate to win the war to keep the Union together Political views Officially made the war about slavery, instead of just keeping the Union together Made sure that Britain and France did not help the South, as they did not support slavery
