1 After the war… Germany was divided into four zones – British, American, French, and Soviet. The city of Berlin was also divided. Land routes to Berlin were not negotiated.

2 Conflict Arose Despite discussions over the topic, Truman, Churchill, and Stalin did not see eye to eye about what should be done about Germany. Truman and Churchill wanted a strong Germany. Stalin did not.

3 Berlin Blockaded On March 31, 1948, Soviet troops began to block all land access to the city of Berlin by French, American, and British troops. They claimed that there was a bridge that needed repair.

4 Berlin Blockaded Berlin was still in a massive rebuilding stage from the war. There was very little food and coal in storage. The blockade left approximately 2,000,000 people in West Berlin without necessary supplies to live, let alone to rebuild.
