1 A change in position over time.
Science Thought 8/14  What is “motion”? A change in position over time.

2 Today in class Paste Nerd Word LIST to entry #22 (2 pages)
Write Reflection 8/14 – 8/18 on entry # 23 Paste Nerd Word tic tac toe to LAST page of INB Paste Scientific Method as entry #18 – complete after pretest Open INB to Science Thoughts 8/7-8/11 Complete the Pre-test (paste as entry #24 AFTER I grade INB) Complete Nerd Word Activity Paste Investigating Motion as entry #25

3 Science Thought 8/15 Imagine that you are seated on a train moving 75 mph. Explain how you can be moving and not moving at the same time. Moving if viewed from the street. Not moving if viewed from the train.

4 Imagine two cars that are in adjacent lanes
Imagine two cars that are in adjacent lanes. You are sitting in one car and a friend is in the other. From your point of view, it appears that your friend is moving backward. Can you describe the overall motion of the cars?

5 If you can't see any landmarks, you can't tell which car is moving
If you can't see any landmarks, you can't tell which car is moving. Without a frame of reference (the perspective from which motion is observed), you would not be able to describe the motion with certainty.

6 For example, your car might be stopped while your friend's car is moving backward, your friend's car might be stopped while your car is moving forward, or perhaps both cars are moving away from each other simultaneously.

7 However, once you establish the frame of reference, you can clearly describe the motion with respect to that frame.

8 Galileo Galilei was the first person to assert the basic principle of relativity, which states that motion is relative to a frame of reference.

9 Today in class We will complete the activities in the hallway. Quiet!
green line to green line Time 3 times then draw what you saw rotate Complete ONLY the data tables on lab sheet – then return to classroom Review Classwork from last week Scientific Method TEST tomorrow

10 Name the object hanging on the wall in the front of the room.
Science Thoughts 8/16 Name the object that is hanging on the wall to the left of the safety shower. Name the object on top of the counter that is under the windows, behind Mrs. Kuropas’s desk. Name the object hanging on the wall in the front of the room.

11 Today in class Scientific Method Test postponed to Monday Review classwork from last week Scientific Method Review Complete Investigating Motion Lab “Book Walk” to introduce tomorrow’s lesson

12 What is speed? Speed is the distance moved in a given period of time.
Science Thoughts 8/17 What is speed? Speed is the distance moved in a given period of time.

13 Today in class Textbook Questions Entry # 26 (book work). Glue each section on the top and respond under the questions. Use FOUR colors in your responses.

14 What two measurements are needed to calculate speed? Distance and time
Science Thoughts 8/18 What two measurements are needed to calculate speed? Distance and time

15 Recognizing Motion An object is in motion when its distance from another object is changing. Whether an object is moving or not depends on your point of view.

16 Motion and Reference Points
An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point. A reference point is a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion

17 Imagine you are inside a train moving forward at 5 mph and you throw a ball forward at 10 mph. In your own frame of reference, the ball moves forward at 10 mph.

18 However, from the point of view of an observer standing on the ground, the ball moves forward at the speed of the throw plus the speed of the train. Measured in the reference frame of the bystander, the ball moves forward at 15 mph. Despite the difference in the apparent motion of the ball, both frames of reference are equally valid.

19 Review of Motion Motion is the change of position over time.
Position is the location or place of an object Reference Point is a location to which you compare other locations Point of View is where the viewer is located Review of Motion

20 THIS WILL BE A LAB GRADE (major)
Run! Lab 4 people in each group Mover, 3 timers, recorder 3 trials – walk, run, other Rotate positions until everyone has data Go to green rectangles Complete graph, analysis and conclusion THIS WILL BE A LAB GRADE (major)

21 Using the data collected, respond to the questions
Using the data collected, respond to the questions. Remember to use at least 4 colors.
