1 Ch 9 Cellular Respiration

2 9-1 Chemical Pathways calorie- the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.

3 9-1 Chemical Pathways Cellular respiration- process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.

4 9-1 Chemical Pathways Glycolysis- the first process in cellular respiration that releases a small amount of energy in the food we eat.

5 9-1 Chemical Pathways During glycolysis, one 6-carbon sugar molecule is split into two 3-carbon molecules. NAD+- an electron carrier. Carries two high energy electrons as NADH.

6 9-1 Chemical Pathways Fermentation- occurs when oxygen is not present.
Anaerobic- without oxygen. Main types of fermentation: 1) lactic acid 2) alcoholic

7 9-2 The Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport
Aerobic- requires oxygen. Krebs cycle- the 3-carbon molecule formed during glycolysis is broken down into three carbon dioxide molecules, releasing more energy.

8 9-2 The Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport
Electron transport chain- uses high-energy electrons from the Krebs cycle to “charge” ADP into ATP.

9 9-2 The Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport
