Presentation on theme: "9-1 Cellular Respiration"— Presentation transcript:

1 9-1 Cellular Respiration Food provides living things with the chemical building blocks they need to grow and reproduce

2 Chemical Energy and Food
calorie = the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius. Glycolysis = the first process that begins the breakdown of glucose to release energy.

3 Overview of Cellular Respiration
Processes that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen. 6O2 + C6H12O CO2 + 6H2O + ATP (Reactants) (Products) Oxygen + glucose is converted to carbon dioxide + water + energy

4 Where does Cellular Respiration Take Place?
Mitochondria

5 Chloroplast & Mitochondria
Both plants and animals need energy, so they both have mitochondria! Only plants have chloroplast!

6 Fermentation Fermentation = releasing energy from food molecules to produce ATP without oxygen Anaerobic = “not in air” Two types Alcoholic fermentation produces alcohol Lactic acid fermentation produces lactic acid
