1 Writing to Describe & Explain
Invent a new drink and describe how it tastes. Use techniques effectively to create a powerful image in the readers’ minds. Use the five senses and AFOREST to make the description more engaging and effective.

2 Describing a Place Task: Read the description on London.
How has the writer of this piece made her writing interesting? What language techniques can you spot? Has she used all the senses (describing what she can see, smell, touch, hear and taste)? Use your mark scheme to award the piece a mark. What could they do to improve?

3 Writing Task A place can appear to be very different if you visit it at different times of year. Choose a place that you know well and describe it at two different times of year for a travel website, explaining why it is a good place to go. 40 marks – 45 minutes

4 Use the Question 5 Mark Scheme to award them a mark out of 40:
Peer Evaluation Read your partner’s work, and check if they have: Used AFOREST techniques? Used sensory description? Used punctuation correctly? Used correct spelling throughout? Use the Question 5 Mark Scheme to award them a mark out of 40: a mark out of 24 for content and organisation a mark out of 16 for technical accuracy (SPaG) Choose Chapter 5: Language
