1 JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES
WELCOME TO THE JACKSON STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST PLEASE TURN OFF CELL PHONES

2 Luke 4:16-21 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up
Luke 4:16-21  So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17  And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written: 18  "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." 20  Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21  And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."

3 JESUS CAME

4 WHY JESUS CAME Luke 4:18-19 is a fulfillment of Isaiah 61:1-2  "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2  To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,

5 WHY JESUS CAME All of these things he was to do relate to the sin that separates us from God. - Isaiah 59:1-2 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear. Save from sin - Matthew 1:21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins." Save the lost - Luke 19:9-10 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; 10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

6 1. TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.
Sin impoverishes, but the Messiah brought good news to the poor. Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. John 3:16-17  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

7 1. TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.
Matthew 11:2-6  And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3  and said to Him, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" 4  Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: 5  The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. 6  And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me."

8 1. TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.
James 2:1-9  My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. 2  For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, 3  and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, "You sit here in a good place," and say to the poor man, "You stand there," or, "Sit here at my footstool," 4  have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? >>>

9 1. TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR.
5  Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? 6  But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? 7  Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called? 8  If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself," you do well; 9  but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.

10 2. TO HEAL THE BROKEN HEARTED.
Sin breaks hearts, but the Messiah brought good news to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18  The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. Psalm 41:4  I said, "LORD, be merciful to me; Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You." Psalm 51:17  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, A broken and a contrite heart-- These, O God, You will not despise. Psalm 147:3  He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.

11 3. TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES
Sin captivates and enslaves, but the Messiah came to set the captive free. Colossians 1:13-14  He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14  in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. Psalm 146:7-8  Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners. 8  The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; The LORD raises those who are bowed down; The LORD loves the righteous.

12 3. TO PROCLAIM LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES
Psalm 102:  For He looked down from the height of His sanctuary; From heaven the LORD viewed the earth, 20  To hear the groaning of the prisoner, To release those appointed to death, 2 Timothy 2:24-26  And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25  in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26  and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

13 4. TO RECOVER SIGHT TO THE BLIND.
Sin blinds, but the Messiah came to heal spiritual and moral blindness. Jeremiah 5:21 'Hear this now, O foolish people, Without understanding, Who have eyes and see not, And who have ears and hear not: John 3:3  Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

14 4. TO RECOVER SIGHT TO THE BLIND.
Matthew 13:13  Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. John 3: And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God." There is none so blind as he who will not see.

15 5. TO SET AT LIBERTY THOSE THAT ARE OPPRESSED.
Sin oppresses its victims, but the Messiah came to bring liberty to the oppressed. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18  Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18  But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. Galatians 5:1  Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.

16 5. TO SET AT LIBERTY THOSE THAT ARE OPPRESSED.
Galatians 5:13  For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 2 Peter 2:18-19  For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. 19  While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.

17 6. TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.
Jesus came to preach deliverance, bring deliverance and be deliverance for us. Leviticus 25:8-10  'And you shall count seven sabbaths of years for yourself, seven times seven years; and the time of the seven sabbaths of years shall be to you forty-nine years. 9  Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land. 10  And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a Jubilee for you; and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family.

18 6. TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.
Leviticus 25:47-55  'Now if a sojourner or stranger close to you becomes rich, and one of your brethren who dwells by him becomes poor, and sells himself to the stranger or sojourner close to you, or to a member of the stranger's family, 48  after he is sold he may be redeemed again. One of his brothers may redeem him; 49  or his uncle or his uncle's son may redeem him; or anyone who is near of kin to him in his family may redeem him; or if he is able he may redeem himself. 50  Thus he shall reckon with him who bought him: The price of his release shall be according to the number of years, from the year that he was sold to him until the Year of Jubilee; it shall be according to the time of a hired servant for him. >>>

19 6. TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.
51  If there are still many years remaining, according to them he shall repay the price of his redemption from the money with which he was bought. 52  And if there remain but a few years until the Year of Jubilee, then he shall reckon with him, and according to his years he shall repay him the price of his redemption. 53  He shall be with him as a yearly hired servant, and he shall not rule with rigor over him in your sight. 54  And if he is not redeemed in these years, then he shall be released in the Year of Jubilee--he and his children with him. 55  For the children of Israel are servants to Me; they are My servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

20 6. TO PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.
2 Corinthians 6:1-2  We then, as workers together with Him also plead with you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2  For He says: "In an acceptable time I have heard you, And in the day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. A specific year - The year of Jubilee, the year of freedom; freeing us from our sins and granting hope through salvation to eternal life in heaven; the final freedom in heaven.

21 WHY JESUS CAME Jesus came to preach the gospel to the poor.
Jesus came to heal the broken hearted. Jesus came to proclaim liberty to the captive. Jesus came to recover sight to the blind. Jesus came to set a liberty the oppressed. Jesus came to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. JESUS CAME TO SET YOU FREE FROM YOUR SIN.
