How do nouns show ownership?

2. Purpose
Possessive nouns show that something belongs to someone or something.
Ownership is usually indicated by adding ‘s to a word.

3. Singular Possessive Nouns
Nouns that are singular (ONE someone or something owns an object) show possession by simply adding ‘s
Example:
The boots belong to the giraffe.
The giraffe’s boots.

4. Plural Nouns Remember:
To make a singular noun plural most add -s or - es
Examples:
boot (singular)
boot + -s→ boots (plural; more than one boot)
class (singular)
class + -es→ classes (more than one class)

5. More Plural Nouns Examples: child (singular) woman (singular)
There are some nouns that in order to make plural you have to change the way the word is spelled.
Examples:
child (singular) woman (singular)
children (plural) deer, sheep women (plural)
Some nouns the spelling does not change; the same word can mean one or many!

6. Plural Possessive Nouns
Because most plural nouns add -s or -es to indicate more than one…
in order to show possession you only need to add an ‘ to the end of the noun.
If a noun does not add -s or -es to indicate more than one…
you add ‘s in order to show possession.

7. Plural Possessive Examples
The boots belong to the giraffes.
The giraffes’ boots.

8. Plural Possessive Examples
The wool belongs to the four sheep.
The sheep’s wool.
The books belong to the children.
The children’s books.
