October 28, 1992 US Senator and former New York Knick Bill Bradley’s (D-NJ) bill, the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992, becomes law under President George Bush. October 1992 – October 1993 PASPA provides states the opportunity to pass a law to opt-into sports betting. October 1993 Four states: Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana pass laws opting-into sports betting.

March 2009 State Senator Lesniak files lawsuit to overturn PASPA. August 2009 During his campaign for governor, Chris Christie announces his support for legalized sports betting. November 2009 BP3 meets with soon-to-be Governor Christie to discuss, for the first time, the strategy to legalize sports betting.

May 2010 Governor Christie asks Senate President Stephen Sweeney, Senator Lesniak and BP3 to table the ballot referendum until he can get the NFL to approve the Super Bowl in NJ. May 26, 2010 New Jersey, under Governor Christie, is named the hosts of Super Bowl XLVII. The game is scheduled to be played on February 2, Governor Christie keeps his word to approve the referendum to amend NJ’s constitution to add legalized regulated sports betting. August 2011 The New Jersey Legislature approves of adding the referendum to the November 2011 ballots.

November 2011 BP3 launches a successful public affairs campaign where voters overwhelmingly approve amending state constitution to allow sports betting with 67% approval across every demographic group. December 2011 New Jersey passes enabling legislation to allow sports betting at casinos and racetracks. January 2012 Governor Christie signs Sports Wagering Act into law, with first bets scheduled to be placed at Atlantic Club Casino on January 12, 2012.

August 2012 The NFL files to enjoin the Atlantic City Club from taking their first bet until the Courts can determine if New Jersey’s law violates the PASPA (NFL v. Christie). August 2012-January 2013 BP3 lobbies Governor Christie to hire Ted Olson to defend New Jersey’s law. The case is brought before Judge Michael Shipp, a Patterson native and brother of an NFL player. February 2013 Judge Shipp rules in favor of the sports leagues, and against New Jersey’s law.

March 2013 New Jersey appeals Judge Shipp’s decision in the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. September 2013 The Third Circuit Court of Appeals upholds the lower court’s decision by a vote of 2-1, but Judge Julio Fuentes provides hope with his dissenting opinion. October 2014 Sen. Lesniak introduces new Sports Wagering Act, allowing casinos and racetracks to provide sports betting with no regulation.

August 2015 New Jersey once again loses in the Third Circuit Court in an en banc decision (8-3). June 2017 US Supreme Court agrees to hear the case. December 2017 US Supreme Court hears oral arguments.
