Our goals today What are the University and LSB curriculum requirements? Who delivers academic advising here at SCU? What classes should I take in the Fall? How do I plan for and register for classes?
6
LEAVEY SCHOOL OF BUSINESS
What I need for today Computer/ Phone Pencil Blue Sheet Requirement Check-list Almost all students come into the LSB as undeclared LSB first year students. This is our preference as the curriculum is built to allow students to explore different areas of interest and then determine their major by the end of their Sophomore year. All students must declare at the end of their sophomore year. There is no constraint on which major a student can select in the LSB-all majors are available. All students must declare their major by the end of their Sophomore year: faculty advisors, Career Center and learning about their goals/interests are some of the methods used to assist in this decision. Staying informed is your responsibility
Prioritize review: Office of the Registrar- Monica Augustin Undergraduate Business Programs (UGBP)- Jo-Anne Shibles Your Peer Advisor Drahmann Academic Advising Center You will receive lots, and lots, and lots of s. Truly, I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed when you open you box in the morning. But it’s up to you to make sure that you manage reading s appropriately. The university offices will send you notices via your SCU gmail account. When our office, or the Office of the Registrar, or the Bursars office, etc., send an to that account, you are considered officially notified. So, it’s extremely important that you read your s so that you can stay appropriately informed.

University Business School Major What you’ll see on the requirements checklist is that required courses are grouped by University core – left side Business school core – right side Major – middle You may also complete courses for a 2nd major, or a minor, or elective courses that don’t meet specific requirements, but do round out your education. 2nd Major Minor Electives

Calculus MATH 30 and 31 – Calculus for Business
(for business students) Most business students take Math 30/31. If you plan to take a major or minor which requires additional math, take MATH 11/12 which are prerequisites for higher level math classes. MATH 11 and 12 – Calculus and Analytic Geometry (for advanced math classes)
12
Calculus CRE & placement (ALEKS) Mary Long – mlong@scu.edu
CRE not required – AP credit, or transfer credit for MATH 9, 11 or 30 If you haven’t received AP credit, you should have taken the calculus readiness exam and received a notice from the math department about which calculus course you should enroll in pre-calculus or calculus. If you haven’t received AP credit or taken the CRE, plan to take the CRE prior to winter registration and enroll in math for winter quarter. CRE taken – You’ve received a notice about placement CRE not taken – You must take it prior to enrolling in calculus for winter quarter
13
CRE Scores and Class Placement
LAB Notes 0-60 Math 9 Math 9L required Must enroll in Math 9 and Lab. 61-72 Math 9L optional Lab is optional but encouraged 73-75 Math 9* *Very close score to take calculus. Contact Mary Long to take CRE again. If don’t take CRE a 2nd time enroll in Math 9. 76-100 Math 11 or 30 No lab requirement (optional Math 11L or 30L) NOTE: If you don’t have credit for AP calculus, and you haven’t taken the calculus readiness exam (CRE), plan to take MATH 9 in the fall or MATH 11/30 in winter. All LEAD students must take associated lab class, ie Math 9, 11 or 30 must take Math 9L, Math 11L or Math 30L.
14
Calculus and AP AP Exam Score Earns SCU Credit For Notes Calculus AB
MATH 11 Enroll in MATH 12 Calculus BC 3 MATH 11 & 12 Business calculus requirement fulfilled. I’ve pulled the Math information from the Advanced Placement chart. Please note that if you receive credit for MATH 11 only, you may go on to take either MATH 12 or MATH 31. However, the math department will tell you that you’re better off taking MATH 12 if you’ve receive AP credit for MATH 11.
15
Calculus Either way, the math department wants us to remind you that waiting to take math is a bad strategy. Particularly if you struggle with math, it’s important to take it early in order to build on the foundations you’ve already created. The farther you get from those foundations, the tougher it will be. Plus, if you wait too long you could find yourself faced with an issue when it’s time to graduate and you’re having trouble passing math.
16
2nd Language For Business 2nd course/1st year of college level
The 2nd language requirement for business students is proficiency to the 2nd course in the first year of college level language. Like math, the folks in the modern languages department would remind you not to wait too long to start your 2nd language. First, you may be building on a foundation you’ve already started. Second, who’s planning to study abroad? You should know that it’s a competitive process. While not all programs require that you have 2nd language experience, you do have to explain your academic goals in the application process and already having a start in that 2nd language can’t hurt. The first course in a language sequence is only offered in the fall
17
Religion, Theology & Culture
RSOC, TESP, SCTR RTC 1 (numbered 1-19) RTC 2 (numbered 20-99) RTC 3 (numbered 100 and above) Must be completed in sequence Third course may not be taken until you’re a junior
