1 Science Study Guide Chapter 13

2 A mixture it made up of different substances that are combined physically but not chemically.
The substances that make up a solution mix together at the molecular level.

3 The measure of how much of one substance can be dissolved in another substance is called solubility.
In the solution of alcohol and iodine, the iodine is the solute.

4 In the solution of alcohol and iodine, the alcohol is the solvent.
A chemical property is the ability of a material to change its chemical makeup.

5 The ratio of mass to volume is called density.
The temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid is called melting point. Boiling point is the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas.

6 Heat changes an egg that is fried in a pan because heat causes chemical reactions and chemical changes in the egg.

7 When chemical reactions occur, matter is conserved.
Matter is not destroyed. Matter changes into other kinds of matter, but the total mass of all matter remains the same.

8 When a light bulb is wired to a battery this forms a circuit.
The physical property of the wire in the circuit allows energy to flow from the battery to the light bulb. Conductivity allows energy to flow through the circuit.

9 Electrical wires are covered with rubber because rubber is an insulator.
It covers metal wires for safety reasons.
