1 LITE Session 11: Self harm

2 Self-harm is when people hurt themselves or damage their health on purpose. Sometimes people do this in secret. There are lots of different reasons why someone might self-harm, but there are also different ways to cope and get help.  Childline

3 Advice for people who self harm
Keep a diary – try to identify triggers and avoid them Find a healthy alternative coping strategy Try some mindfulness techniques to manage stress and emotions Talk to people and tell them that you’re not coping.

4 If a friend self harms and displays the following symptoms you must get urgent help
Feeling weak or shaky Dizzy or light headed Cold and clammy Rapid, shallow breathing Feeling confused or anxious

5 Learning Outcomes Self harm is a behaviour not an illness
People who self harm are trying to communicate that they are distressed Most people who self harm are not feeling suicidal.
