Immune Response
2
Immune System Responsible for protecting the body from disease.
3 lines of defense
3
1st Line of Defense SKIN! Acts as a barrier to invading pathogens.
4
2nd Line of Defense Occurs when injured cells release chemicals that increase the blood flow to an invaded region. The blood brings white blood cells that attack the pathogens. Macrophage: a type of white blood cell that engulfs and kills pathogens.
5
3rd Line of Defense Involves attacking specific pathogens.
Macrophages, T Cells, and B Cells attack and kill infected cells.
7
Active Immunity The body is exposed to a pathogen and produces antigens specific to that pathogen. Person can be exposed accidentally or purposefully by vaccination.
8
Passive Immunity The antibodies are passed from one individual to another. Usually through pregnancy.
