Agenda Warm Up Prepare for Court Get out a sheet of paper and sit quietly

2 Juvenile Court Cases

3 Defense Defense- 2 “attorneys” per case
Your job is to represent the juvenile in court Your job may not be to prove your client is not guilty but to instead: Protect their rights Fight for what is best for them Fight for a lighter sentence Advocate for rehabilitation rather than punishment Also consider: ACEs? Age/Brain Development

4 Prosecution Prosecution- 2 “attorneys” per case
Your job is to represent the “people” (city, county, or state government) Your job is to not only prove the juvenile is guilty but to make recommendations to the judge for treatment and/or sentencing: Consider the following factors: First-time offender? Second? Third? Juvenile’s attitude/Parent’s attitude Admitted a problem? Asked for help?

5 Your Court File You will be provided with a file to help you prepare your case. There are TWO sections that will be helpful in providing information in preparing your case: Background Crime At the end of each file, there is a section reviewing the judge’s decision in the real life case and an update on the juvenile. You will not base your presentation on what actually happened with the case or how the juvenile went on to do in the future.

2) A 2 minute statement of facts and persuasion 3) A prepared rebuttal to the opponents argument 4) A persuasive closing statement

7 How you will be graded?? Well prepare –rehearsed Professional demeanor
Clear evidence Precise facts- including information from the articles Strong argument Knowledge of the juvenile court system
