2 Abolitionist Voices Grow Louder
Many attempts to protect free blacks in the north in response to the Fugitive Slave Act: Harriet Beecher Stowe writes “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” (1852) Exposes horrors of slavery South bans the book! Abe Lincoln later said, “So this is the little lady who made the big war.”

3 The Powerful Story Why do you think the book was SO popular?
Stowe told the story of Uncle Tom, a slave noted for his kindness and devotion to his religion. Tom is bought by a man named Simon Legree, a cruel planter who treats his slaves brutally! In the end, Tom refuses to obey Legree’s order to whip another slave. So, Legree whips Tom to death. Why do you think the book was SO popular?

4 Kansas Nebraska Act 1854 Stephen Douglas (senator from Illinois) proposed the idea ANOTHER attempt at compromise Kansas and Nebraska would become new states Popular sovereignty would decide issue of slavery in these 2 territories Repeals Missouri Compromise…HOW?

While you watch: Did the Kansas-Nebraska Act work? What were the immediate results of the Kansas-Nebraska Act? VIDEO 1855: Kansas held elections to choose SLAVE/FREE HUNDREDS crossed into Kansas and voted ILLEGALLY They helped to elect a PRO-SLAVERY government! Leads to “Bleeding Kansas” Pro-Slavery and Anti-Slavery forces rush to Kansas for the vote = “Mini Civil War”

7 Dred Scott Decision 1857 Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri
In 1834 he was brought north into Illinois with his master Later - brought back to Missouri where his master died Scott claimed he was a free person because he once lived in a free state Dred Scott v. Sandford heard by Supreme Court Court ruled Scott was not a citizen and therefore, could NOT sue for his freedom Slavery was ruled legal throughout western territories Increases abolitionist causes to end slavery

8 The RESULTS of the Dred Scott case
The case was a major reason for the Election of anti-slavery candidate ABRAHAM LINCOLN The case had a profound impact on America, and is commonly know as one of the most infamous cases in Supreme Court History... NEXT UP: The CIVIL WAR!
