1 Cell Membrane: Transport What goes in? What goes out?

2 Cell membrane controls flow of materials into and out of the cell.
Fluid mosaic model

3 Passive Transport - No Energy Required
Active Transport – Energy Required

4 Passive transport Diffusion Facilitated Diffusion Osmosis

5 DIFFUSION Particles move from areas of high concentration to low concentration. (Down concentration gradient) Particles spread evenly. Does NOT require energy.

6

7 Facilitated diffusion
Charged and large particles can be carried through protein channels. Fast and specific Move from high to low concentration

8 osmosis Diffusion of WATER through a selectively permeable membrane.
When the particles are too big to fit through the membrane, WATER moves across the membrane.

9 OSMOSIS or DIFFUSION?

10 OSMOSIS or DIFFUSION?

11 OSMOSIS or DIFFUSION?

12 OSMOSIS or DIFFUSION?

13 OSMOSIS or DIFFUSION?

14 ACTIVE transport Sometimes, cells must move materials from low to high concentration (against gradient). Active transport requires energy (ATP).

15 Endo & Exocytosis How big bulk materials get transported
Endocytosis – materials taken in by cell membrane pockets Exocytosis – materials leaving the cell in membrane pockets

16 Crash Course - Membrane Transport

17 EGG Transport explanation
What happened when the egg shell was dissolved? What happened when the egg without the shell was submerged in corn syrup? What happened when the egg was removed from corn syrup then submerged in water? Egg experiment explained (You Tube)

18 Diabetes made simple How diabetes works (You Tube)
What type of transport would this be?
