1 Summary & recommendations multi-mission synergies session 9
Roger Haagmans Swarm DQW meeting, 12 October 2018

2 Session overview Session 9: Multi-mission Synergies
Chair: Roger Haagmans Core field modeling with a combined dataset from CHAMP, DMSP and Swarm Partick Alken Cryosat magnetometer data calibration Nils Olsen Cryosat and GOCE magnetometer calibration and applications for ionospheric currents Observation capabilities of GOCE and GRACE related to the Swarm mission objectives Application of the multi-satellites observations for ionospheric climatology and space weather research Comparison of TEC specifications obtained from a data assimilation model with Swarm observations Claudia Stolle Eelco Doornbos Yurii Cherniak Ludger Scherliess Similarities and differences between SWARM and SNIPE constellation (Small scale magNetospheric and Ionospheric Plasma Experiments) Junga Hwang

3 Magnetometers of other satellites
DMSP to bridge the GAP between Swarm and CHAMP: attitude correction, data editing and calibration. Resulting field estimates show promising results. CryoSat-2 AOCS fluxgate magnetometer (3x) calibration: includes temperature and magneto torquer correction Both before rely on e.g. CHOAS-6 as prior for calibration and/or alignment Potential for field modelling consistent with CHAOS-6 shown and also for external signals like FAC, MMA GOCE result seem also useful despite slightly higher noise level

4 Magnetometers of other satellites: suggestions
Joint effort of a “Magnetometer calibration expert group” ? Workshop on “Multi-mission data calibration and application” about about six months from now Improved calibration/characterization of data Prepare and provide data to scientific community daily CDF files with time, position, calibrated BFGM, STR data, BNEC, flags, … Timeframe: within 3 – 6 months (well before Living Planet in May 2019) Publication describing data product, calibration process … Use CryoSat-2 dataset for gap between CHAMP and Swarm Use GOCE, GRACE(?), CryoSat-2 and in a joint modelling process with Swarm also for consistent long term modelling

5 GOCE and GRACE Products
Available now GOCE: Neutral density Horizontal neutral (cross)wind New data products in development GOCE: Deorbit phase thermosphere data Vertical neutral wind TEC and ROTI (topside) Magnetic field variations (Delta-B) and FAC GRACE

6 GOCE and GRACE observation capabilities
GOCE thermosphere-ionosphere data should be of high interest to researchers working on Swarm mission objectives. Significant additions and upgrades are coming. GRACE and GRACE-FO offer the potential of valuable additional synergy possibilities, with very long time series. But more work is required to achieve accessible, well-validated and documented products, with similar standards as for Swarm and GOCE. Need for ACC data processing experts on GRACE(-FO) and Swarm to come together and exchange experience.

7 Multi satellite (TEC) for modelling and space weather
Multi satellite TEC shows discrepancies with models (Nequick, IRI): The major source of the model-data discrepancies in the EC/TEC domain comes from the topside ionosphere/plasmasphere system. The most problematic altitude region for the model/data differences was found to be within the altitudinal range of ~ km. Multi-mission TEC combination suited for studying climatologies and events like TIDs, bubbles, etc. GIAM (physics based assimilation model)model comparisons with GOCE data which were not assimilated reasonably good agreement indicating the potential of the model likely also for various Swarm observations in the future. A further developed model like this is in line with 4D-Ionosphere study intentions

8 Swarm and SNIPE SNIPE is Korean initiative to launch 4 nanosatellites in 2020 as small scale magnetospheric and ionospheric plasma experiment targeting: Spatial scale and energy dispersion of electron microbursts Temporal and spatial variations of plasma trough during magnetic storms Temporal and spatial variations of electron density and temperature in polar cap patches Measuring length of coherence for bubbles/blobs EMIC waves at the top of ionosphere Large amplitude disturbance of field aligned currents LP, Magnetometer, GPS in sun-synchroneous orbit of 550 km Swarm and SNIPE Synergy Potential

9 Multi-Mission additional observations
Upper atmosphere “climate” trend analysis and studies of longer term secular variation vs solar cycle effects, quantification of energy transports by waves and other phenomena need multi-mission consistent and reliable datasets especially regarding calibration Identification and coordination of multi-mission potential and corresponding needs is targeted by a proposed working group and a potential workshop Can we make a concrete step towards this now?
