Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (Simon K)
National Law that controls the environmental effects of active surface mining and mining in used and recovered mining sites. Some functions: Sets up the rules mines must follow Gives permits to mine Requires a bond big enough to cover the reclamation fees. Regulates which lands are eligible for mining. Name, Draft Year, Amendment Years, International or National B) Description of Function; Environmental Issues Affected C) Agency/Group Responsible for Regulation and Enforcement (i.e. United Nations, Department of Interior, EPA, etc.)

Agency/Group Responsible for Regulation and Enforcement
Controlled by the Department of the Interior, the Office of Surface Mining. The federal government must approve a program by the SMCRA before the state can begin operating on a land. Federal lands are controlled by the federal government.
