7 “The term persons with disabilities is used to apply to all persons with disabilities including those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various attitudinal and environmental barriers, hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.” -United Nations Definition of Disability

8 Disability Statistics
15% Disability Statistics 11% The WHO –World Health Organization says that 15% of the world’s population is disabled. That number is steadily climbing. AHEAD (Association on Higher Education and Disability) says that as of , 11% of undergraduates had a REPORTED disability. This doesn’t count those folks who don’t register with a campus service.

9 United Nations & WHO “Accessibility is a Human Rights Issue” Make sure people with disabilities can use the same services as everyone else. Have services or supports in place that allow people with disabilities to live independently. So, the United Nations and the WHO routinely report on disability. And they both have taken pretty strong stances on what we should be doing and how we should be doing it. Both of these organizations view accessibility as an extremely important issue…. In 2011, the WHO issued a pretty extensive report on disability and they made 9 recommendations for nations, businesses, organizations, and pretty much any entity that deals with the public... Here are their first 2 recommendations.... I bring these to your attention because they are the 2 basic tenants of web accessibility.
