2 8th Amendment No cruel and unusual punishment
No excessive bail or fines People are innocent until proven guilty

3 8th Amendment 1) Bail: cash an arrested person gives to court to ensure that they will appear in court Based on person’s ability to pay and the seriousness of the crime If the defendant doesn't show up, the court may keep the bail and issue a warrant for the defendant's arrest

4 8th Amendment 2) Bail Reform Act of 1984
No bail given if person is dangerous or a flight risk Time served subtracted from sentence

6 8th Amendment 3) Fines: Pay money as penalty for committing a crime
Fines should be equal to the seriousness of the crime Non-payment can result in jail time

7 FROM THE CITY OF TUCSON If you do not pay your fine on your court date, the court may: Impose late fees. Suspend your driving privileges. Issue a warrant for your arrest. Seize your wages, tax refunds, bank accounts or personal property such as your car. Notify a collection agency. Harm your credit score.
