BROCHURE WHAT IS A BROCHURE? “a pamphlet or booklet, especially one containing summarized or introductory information or advertising.” (Source: The Collins English Dictionary 1986:198) WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A BROCHURE? Brochures are designed and used: - as a marketing tool to advertise services or product. - as an information providing tool to inform people about specific things like HIV/AIDS, TB, etc.

BROCHURE WRITING TIPS PURPOSE - Ask yourself what do you want to achieve, what message do you want to get across, who is your target audience, etc. - Write down everything you would like to include in the brochure. - Include the benefits to the clients and why they should choose your services/products. - Give a brief history of your company and some testimonies of other clients. LAYOUT - Plan the layout carefully/ first impressions are lasting. - The cover page should be attractive. - Include graphic and other pertinent information.

BROCHURE WRITING TIPS WRITING STYLE - Keep your sentences short and to the point. - Only necessary information. - Use powerful words like: save, new, results, guarantee, free, sale, proven, etc. HEADINGS - Use headings to draw attention to sections. - Headings should stand out. - Use bigger font, different colour or bold print.

BROCHURE WRITING TIPS GRAMMAR & SPELLING - Make sure there are no grammatical or spelling mistakes. - Always get someone to proofread your brochure. COLOUR COMBINATIONS - Be aware of colours that you use. - The font and the background colours used should complement each other. PAPER QUALITY - Plays an important role to impress clients. - Good quality paper will prevent brochures from flopping over and looking unattractive and messy.

BROCHURE When you design a brochure to sell or explain your products or services, you must remember that this brochure is going to “talk on your behalf” about your services or product that you offer. It is extremely important to make sure that your brochure; - gets the correct message across; - is clear; - sells or explains your product or service. (your ultimate goal)

BROCHURE WRITING TIPS Before you write your brochure, ask yourself these questions. The Basics: What do you hope to accomplish with your brochure? Who is your audience? Why do you expect this audience to be interested in your message? How do you hope your audience will response to your message? What are your audience’s needs?

BROCHURE WRITING TIPS Getting Started: Try to develop some type of outline for your brochure. How do you want it to begin? How might it be divided into manageable sections to break up copy? Will there be any routine columns or articles? Are there any sidebars to the main copy? How to you want it to end? What photography is available? Who should be interviewed?
