1 Shape, space and measure prompts
This is a useful prompt to ensure that shape, space and measure is covered and taught effectively towards the month age band.

2 Shape, space and measure
Demonstrate the correct mathematical vocabulary when interacting with the children e.g. corners, 2D, 3D, big and small. The children will soon pick this up and become to understand the meaning. Ensure that the learning environment is full of key words and extended vocabulary. For example :- I have one curved edge. I have two faces, one is curved and one is flat. My flat face is a circle. I am a cone! Encourage maths in the classroom by providing lots of practical activities e.g. measuring jugs, funnels, cups, water and recipes involving quantity. How many counting bears can you fit in the box? Turn maths into an investigation and allow the children to get practical and explore. The children will be much more engaged and will enjoy thinking critically and creatively. Provide lots of opportunities for children to sort, compare and talk about objects e.g. can you put the shoes in their correct air? Can you sort out the animals in the correct place? This will engage the learner and create opportunities for them to solve their own problems. Shape, space and measure Beginning t use mathematical names for ‘solid’ 3D shapes and ‘flat’ 2D shapes, and mathematical terms to describe shapes. Selects a particular named shape Ca describe their relative position such as ‘behind’ or ‘next’ to Orders two or three items by length or height Orders two items by weight or capacity. Uses familiar objects and common shapes o create and recreate patterns and builds models. Uses everyday language related to time. Beginning to use everyday language related to money. Orders and sequences familiar events. Measures short periods of time in simple ways. Ensure maths is taught daily, making sure that there is a balance between numbers and SSM within the term. Provide SSM in all areas of learning e.g. 2D and 3D shapes, patterns, sorting
