2 Creation of the Marshall Plan
June 1947, Secretary George C. Marshall proposed the extension of massive economic assistance to the nations in Europe. The Marshall Plan was supposed to improve the economy of Europe. This is also known as the European Recovery Plan. It invested about $13 billion in Europe. This helped Europe grow immensely and fast during the years.

3 U.S Commitment to Europe
To stop the spread of communism to Western Europe the United States and allied Europe formed The North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In retaliation to this The Soviet Union created The Warsaw Pact. Which was an alliance of communist nations in Europe.

4 The Truman Doctrine This was Truman trying to scare Congress by saying Turkey and Greece could be victims of being overthrown without help from other nations. Truman asked Congress for 400 million of emergency assistance. This idea then Spread to whole Western Europe.

5 The origin and implications of the containment policy
The containment policy was a United States policy to prevent the spread of Communism. This policy was developed by Truman. This act was a response to a series of moves by the Soviet Union to enlarge communist influences in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, and Vietnam.

6 Communism,Socialism,and Capitalism
The word capitalism means an economic system in which all or most of the means of production are privately owned and operated, and the investment of capital and the production, distribution and prices of commodities are determined mainly in a free market, rather than by the state. In capitalism, the means of production are generally operated for profit. Socialism refers to state ownership of common property, or state ownership of the means of production. A purely socialist state would be one in which the state owns and operates the means of production. Nearly all modern capitalist countries combine socialism and capitalism. Communism refers to community ownership of property, with the end goal being complete social equality via economic equality. Communism is generally seen by communist countries as an idealized utopian economic and social state that the country as a whole is working toward; that is to say that pure communism is the ideal that the People’s Republic of China is working toward. Such an ideal often justifies means that are not themselves communist ideals. Communism argues that all labor belongs to the individual laborer; no man can own another man's body, and therefore each man owns his own labor.

7 Development and spread of Communism
Karl Marx published “The Communist Manifesto,” which introduced their concept of socialism as a natural result of the conflicts inherent in the capitalist system. Vladimir Lenin was the founder of the Russian Communist Party, leader of the Bolshevik Revolution and first head of the Soviet state. His views became the world wide views of communism. Joseph Stalin was the dictator of the USSR, transformed from a peasant society into a industrial and military superpower. He ruled with terror and millions of his own citizens died during his brutal reign. Mao Zedong led communist forces in China through a long revolution and ruled the communist government from its establishment.

8 Development and spread of communism cont.
Ho Chi Minh helped found the Indochinese communist party and the League for independence of Vietnam. His forces seized the city of Hanoi and declared a Democratic State of Vietnam with Ho as president. Became the symbol of Vietnam's struggle for unification during the conflict.

9 Red Scare, McCarthyism, and Cold War Bolshevik Revolution and Red Scare
The Red Scare led to a range of actions that had a profound and enduring effect on U.S. government and society. Federal employees were analyzed to determine whether they were sufficiently loyal to the government, and the House Un- American Activities Committee, as well as U.S. Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, investigated allegations of subversive elements in the government and the Hollywood film industry. The most enduring symbol of this “Red Scare” was Republican Senator Joseph P. McCarthy of Wisconsin. Senator McCarthy spent almost five years trying in vain to expose communists and other left-wing “loyalty risks” in the U.S. government. In the Cold War, insinuations of disloyalty were enough to convince many Americans that their government was packed with traitors and spies. McCarthy’s accusations were so intimidating that few people dared to speak out against him.

10 Communist Countries Today
China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, and Vietnam.

11 Communism in Russia and China Today
Communism ended in Russia because of the great number of radical reforms that Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev had implemented during his six years as the leader of the USSR.
